Fun in the woods on a chilly morning...
Year 1 were out as usual taking part in Forest Schools activities this morning. We explored the woods and enjoyed what is left of the snow. The children also filled the bird feeders to help the birds and small animals in this cold weather. We lit a fire to keep warm and played lots of running around games. We love 'Capture the Flag' and this week the Unicorn team won. Well done!

However the awards didn’t stop there! Unbeknown to the children, they also won the Graham Taylor OBE Memorial Award for their profound and moving piece of art.

Celebrated Author - Stuart Reid
On Wednesday 21st March we had celebrated author Mr Stuart Reid in school. Stuart visited classes and talked to the children about his books, writing stories and the structure of stories. He also explained about his inspirations for his characters in his books. The children were mesmerised by his reading skills and how he brought reading to life. Stuart worked with the children on developing their writing skills and involved them in a writing workshop. At the end of the day children bought signed copies of his wonderful books.

Summer 2016 - Some exciting changes...
Access to the yard is now only via the rear gate.
Birchwood Buddies now have more space to play!
There's even room to drive a car!
FS2 will meet their teachers here each morning.
FS2 now have plenty of space to explore and play!
Y1 to Y6 will line up on this yard each morning.
While building work is completed, Y3/4 have moved!
We are developing a 'quiet yard' for Y1 - Y6.
Finally, things on the yard have been painted too!
As you can see from the photos above, we've had a busy summer break here at school. There are even more exciting changes inside!
In addition to making these changes to improve the environment for our children, we've also acted on feedback from parents and carers with regards to some safeguarding concerns. At the start and end of each day, our children were walking directly into a car park where there are, of course, moving cars. Closing this gate has enabled us to act on these concerns whilst providing improved facilities for our children. If people have any access needs they are very welcome to contact us to discuss these and, as always, we'll do our very best to help.

Farewell Mrs. Heyes! (28/04/16)
After an amazing 25 years at Birchwood C of E, Mrs. Heyes is leaving us to start an exciting new job. As she's been dedicated to our school familiy for so long and has done such an amazing job, we had to make sure she got a proper Birchwood send off! We held a special assembly, showered Mrs. Heyes with gifts and finished with our own rendition of Bruno Mars' 'Count on Me' - there wasn't a dry eye in the house! We wish you all the luck in the world, Mrs. Heyes and can't wait for you to pop in for a brew!

We were very lucky to be visited by Jessica Parish, the author of the popular ‘Pugalugs’ books. She came to talk to the children about her experience writing the stories and how they came to be published. But obviously, the most exciting part was meeting Dug and Bella - the real life stars of the books!

To reward our children for their hard work towards our recent GOOD grading from ofsted, we had our very own 'GOOD Day'. Games were played, crisps were crunched, carton drinks were guzzled and finally popcorn was munched as a film was watched. Our children are fantastic and deserve this very special treat.
