ENGLISH
As a Church School, we approach all that we do through our Christian Values which are embedded throughout our curriculum. They are:
- Respect
- Trust
- Love
- Perseverance
- Friendship
- Hope
Our Christian Values are integral to all that we do and underpin our attitudes and approach towards our learning.
INTENT
At Birchwood C of E Primary School, our primary aim is to increase children’s confidence, enjoyment and ability in reading, writing and communication. We ensure that we provide all children with depth, breadth and ambition in their learning – ensuring that our curriculum is well sequenced and building on knowledge and skills gained as children progress through school. We promote a love of reading and writing whereby children want to read and write spontaneously with enjoyment. We strive for our children to develop a passion for English to aid them in later life and to enable them to become lifelong learners.
WRITING
We follow a Mastery approach to English through the programme ‘Pathways to Write.’ Units of work are delivered using high quality texts and children in all year groups are given varied opportunities for writing. Skills are built up through repetition within the units and children apply these skills in the writing activities provided. Many opportunities for widening children’s vocabulary are given through the Pathways to Write approach and this builds on the extensive work we do in school to provide our children with a rich and varied vocabulary.
You will find the end of year expectations for writing, reading and spoken language for each of our year groups in the documents below. For further detail on the skills that your children are learning on a termly basis, please contact your class teacher.
